The California State Meteorologist is a function of
the California Department of Water Resources' Division of Flood Management.

The California State Meteorologist performs the following duties:
- prepares weather summaries for forecasting and flood operations;
- coordinates DWR's meteorological activities with the National Weather Service and other relevant government agencies and interested parties;
- advises on developments in the fields of meteorology and climatology and represent California's interests in the meteorological aspects of water resources;
- coordinates collection of data on wind, temperature, radiation, humidity, and evaporation;
- advises engineers regarding meteorological conditions affecting design of hydraulic structures;
- and plans and coordinates meteorological studies for refinement of forecasting techniques in connection with water supply and flood forecasting, especially at key geographical locations that are areas of concern to DWR.
